Good afternoon parents!! I am so happy I saw so many of you last night! It was a great night and I am so proud of all my students! Today we had an amazing last day of school! It started with a house competition in the gym. To all my fellow Kappa people, CONGRATULATIONS!! We came in first place for the snowman competition. Later we worked on many various Christmas activities within the classroom. The last half an hour we exchanged gifts and wished each other a Merry Christmas!

I would like to wish all families a safe and happy holidays filled with the most love and joy! I have had such a great first of the school, and it was been a pleasure to teacher all my students! Thank so much for all the Christmas gifts, but mostly thank you for all your support!

Merry Christmas, and see you all in the new year!!

Christmas story time with Mr. Monaghan!! 



December 17, 2013

Hello parents!!!  Hope to see everyone at the Christmas concert tomorrow!! The students have been working very hard on their performance. Tomorrow is also casual day, so please send children to school in their casual gear! Just wanted to remind everyone that the last day of school is on Thursday, December 19th, 2013. That is also spirit day! The students are encouraged to come to school in red, white, and green! Also gala tickers are on sale right now! The gala will take place on February 22nd, 2013. The tickets are 65$ for adults and 10$ for children. This is going to be a lot of fun, so I hope to see you all there! The children will be presenting songs and plays that’s night as well! Take a look at our day;

Math
Grade 1
The grade ones worked on their math skills in their arithmetic workbooks. They focused on the hundreds place value a lot today.

Grade 2
The grade wrote their math test today.

Language
The grade 1’s and 2’s practiced their phonics skills in their language workbooks. We reviewed syllables together as a class.

Novel Study
Today we read some pages in our Winnie the Pooh novel. We reviewed the main events that occur, and the students were given a chance to make their own poster. They had to create a notice regarding the whereabouts of Eeyore’s tail. They explained what they are looking for, and offer a reward.

The grade 1 and 2 practiced their cursive writing in their cursive workbooks!

Math
Grade 1
Today we reviewed all the different things you can do with numbers. Then, we talked about hoe make number combinations. (3 + 3 = 6). Using snap cubes, we worked on this in groups, and the students continued to practice this in their math makes sense workbooks.
MMS: pg. 82 – 83

Grade 2
Students completed the rest of their review in class. We took it up together, and went over the word problems in preparation for tomorrow’s test.

UOI
Grade 1
Today the students wrote the middle of their story, as well as drawing the picture to go along with it. Tomorrow will be the very last day of story writing before we assemble our books.

Grade 2
Today the grade 2’s built their very own structures!! They used clay and straws, and toothpicks to create their structure! They had an amazing time doing this!

Language
Grade 1
We focused on the suffixes and root words in our phonics today.

Grade 2
We learned that when “c” comes before “I”, “e” or “y”, it makes the “s” sound.

Spelling
Student’s wrote out their spelling words in their notebooks from the board, and then created a sentence for each word. Students completed exercises in their workbooks.

Math
Grade 1
We began our brand new unit today. We talked about what we have learned in regards to numbers so far this year. We talked about the various things we can do with them. They had to look at a picture, and describe using numbers.

Grade 2
The grade two’s completed a math review in their math makes sense. Once this was done, I gave them their review for the test on Tuesday, and I explained that they must complete half of the review and leave the last 2 pages for Monday, so we can go through it as a class!
Math Review

UOI
Grade 1
Today in UOI, the grade one’s finally started their story! The wrote their beginning using proper writing skills, and draw their picture! So far, I have seen some very creative ideas.

Grade 2  
Grade twos explored ways of making structures more stable. We learned that structures become more stable the more they are supported. The grade twos then demonstrated some of what we have learned by drawing their own stable structure plan.

Spelling Test!

Novel Study
We read a few pages together in our Winnie the Pooh novel study. We discussed the signs that were shown on Owl’s door. In groups they wrote out what the signs mean on chart paper. Later we discussed why they think Christopher Robin spelled some of the words wrong? We discussed that its okay to spell words wrong sometimes, if you are trying your very best to spell them out.
Language
We worked in centers to practice our letter blends. Phonics Friday!

Journal

Grade 1

UOI
Grade 1
Now that our main ideas are organized, the grade 1’s are taking the next step on our story writing activity. They filled out a story-planning chart. This helped them organized all the details they will include in their story.

Grade 2
The grade 2s conducted an experiment to see if a structure is more stable if the weight is at the top vs. if the weight is at the bottom of the structure. Students were asked to make predictions of the experiment.  

Language
Both the grade 1’s and 2’s worked on their phonics in their letters and sounds workbooks.

Cursive
I have seen a big improvement in both grade 1 and grade 2 cursive writing. They are expected to always write in cursive going forward.
