October 14th, 2013

Good evening everyone! Hope everyone is doing well. I just wanted to remind all parents that both grades are working on their UOI in class. So far, they are doing an excellent job. I also wanted to let everyone to know that there is a special event occurring on November 26th 2013. There will be an author coming to St. Judes! She will be reading the book she wrote herself to the children! This is really exciting since reading is something we really focus on here at the school. It begins at 10:00am, and parents are welcomed to come and listen as well. She will also be selling her book for 10$ at the school, and some proceeds will be given back to the schoolJ Here is a look at our day today! I

Math
Grade 1
Math: Math Makes Sense- Lesson 10- Strategies Tool Kit
As a class we went through the questions in “understanding a problem” . Students had to think about how they would figure out/answer this question.  Students used snap cubes to try figure out this problem themselves.
Homework
MMS: pg. 38 – 39

Grade 2
Today, the grade two’s learned all the important things that we use a calendar for. We went though what is included on a calendar, and why the time and date are important factors in our lives. The students were really into this, and very excited to tell me their birthdays J
Homework:
MMS: pg. 64 – 65

Unit of Inquiry
Grade 1 & 2
Both grades got a work period to work on their summative projects today. The grade ones entered their research about dinosaurs, and the grade 2 worked on their media creation.

Language
In class we reviewed the some phonics, and then both grades got a chance to practice these rules in their workbooks.
Homework

Language Lesson:
Grade 1
Phonics:
Language 1 pg. 47-48
Language 2 pgs. 42 – 43

Cursive Writing
Both grades got a chance to work on their cursive writing. The grade 1’s worked in their workbooks, and the grade twos had to copy their spelling words 3 times in cursive. I would like the grade 2’s to begin writing on their own, and without the workbook as a guide.
Homework
Grade 1: HWT pgs.  46-47
Grade 2: Spelling words 3 times in cursive (completed in their spelling notebook)

Have a great evening everyone!!
Ms. Rossi
