November 25, 2013

Good morning everyone! Just a reminder that tomorrow is the special author visit! She will be coming in at 10:00am and reading her storybook to the children. The books are $10.00, and half of the money will be donated to the library here at St. Jude’s Academy. Please join us if you can J. This Wednesday is also casual day, so students do not have to come in their uniform! Take a look at our day;

Math
Grade 1
In our new unit of math, we are focusing on the order of things. We looked at a calendar and focused on how the days of the week, and the numbers were in order. We did a colouring worksheet in class, and then we worked in our math makes sense books.
Homework
MMS: pg. 47 – 48

Grade 2
Today we began our brand new unit. We are focusing on addition and subtraction. The grades two’s looked at a picture of a fair, and as a group they had to come up with number sentences that described the picture. They are great at this! They continued to do this in their math makes sense workbooks.
Homework
MMS: pg. 93

UOI
Grade 1
We began our brand new unit today! We are focusing on how we organize ourselves. The central idea of this unit explains the importance of being organized. Today the grade ones had to organize a pile of pictures! They were able to sort them according to holiday! I was very impressed.

Grade 2
we started our third Unit Of Inquiry about Structures and Buildings! We completed a KWL chart about what we know (K) and what we want to know (W) about structures and buildings. The what we learned (L) section of our chart will be completed once we begin to learn new things about our unit. Students were told that they were opening a store and we discussed what makes a good store. We decided that what makes a good store is that it is organized by items on the shelves. The students were given items and they only have four shelves to organize all the items on.  We tried to sort them by type which was great thinking however we discussed the things we need to build something (materials) and then used that framework to divide our items into types of materials. As a group we ended up with four shelves containing things made of different materials: wood, metal, fabric/cotton), and rubber. Language
The grade 1’s and 2’s worked on their phonics in their letters and sounds notebook.
Homework
Grade 1
Letters and sounds pgs. 51-52
Grade 2
Letters and sounds pgs. 37 – 38

Spelling
The grade ones and twos wrote down their spelling words for this week, and had to out them into sentences! Both grades are working on a review of words. I had them pick 10 words from the previous lessons that they had trouble with. They then worked on their exercises in their workbooks!

Grade 1
Spelling: Review Words Lesson 13
-Students write out spelling words 3 times (cursive) in their notebooks. They write sentences for each spelling word.
-Complete spelling workout pages. 53-56
Grade 2
Spelling: Review Words  Lesson 12
