Hello parents. Hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend! Today was another great and busy day! Here’s a look at what we did:

Math
Grade 1
I really felt that most of the students had trouble putting things into groups of 10’s and then counting by 10’s once they were sorted. It is hard to break out of the habit to just counting things one by one. I really felt that I wanted the grade ones to practice this skill some more. We went over this today, and did some examples together on the board. They then worked on some worksheets. The very last worksheet is labeled “Scoop and Sort”. I explained this to the students, so just in case they forget here is what your supposed to do. You have to use any kind of objects (crayons, lego, markers, forks). You have to first “scoop” a handful of that object and count the objects, trying to put them into groups of 10 first. The scoops go up in number from 1 to 10. So, first you count using one scoop, then 2 scoops, then 3 scoops, and so on and so on.
Homework:
3 worksheets

Grade 2
Today the grade 2’s learned how to use a number line to count. We spent most of the class finding the missing numbers on the number line. They were able to understand the importance of order in relation to numbers. This was a concept they grasped right away! Most of the students finished their work in class today,
Homework:
MMS – pg. 33

UOI
Grade 1
Today I discussed the summative project with students went over the rubric, so students know what is expected of them. They spent this period working on their title page for the booklet (summative project). Parents, we are working on a timeline that defines who we are. I sent a note home about this on Friday. I still need baby pictures, toddler pictures, and current day pictures of some students. In total I need 3 pictures. If you can please remember this for tomorrow, that would be great!
No homework

Grade 2
Today the grade twos had the chance to explore India learning specifically about the clothing, food, shelter ect. They then shared their findings to the group. This was a continuation lesson, as the grade 2’s did not finish this last week. – Mr. Monaghan

French – Mme. Stella

Grade 2
Novel Study
As a class, we read chapter 3 of “Flat Stanley”. I can honestly say that I have never seen the students so focused on a story before. They really do love this book. From the reading assessments, I have noticed that the students have some difficulty retelling the story using the beginning, the middle, and the end of the novel. We talked about this today in reference to chapter 4.

Gym – Mr. Browning

Spelling
Grade 1 & 2
Both grades got their new spelling words today. They had to write them down three times in their spelling workbook, and write a sentence for each word. They also had to practice these words in their spelling workbook.
Homework
Grade 1 – Spelling A – pg. 21 – 24
Grade 2 – Spelling B – pg. 17 – 20

Language
Grade 1
We reviewed the vowel sounds from Friday. Together as a class, we compared the words we thought of over the weekend. The grade 1’s continued to work on this in their Letter and Sounds workbook.
Homework: LS: pg. 20 -21

Grade 2
Students will review the importance of the period and practice this skill in their Language workbooks. The grade 2’s also practiced their handwriting skills in their workbooks.
Homework: L2 – pg. 16 -17
HWT: pg. 21 – 22

Blog 17

Happy Friday everyone! We had a great and fun week here at St. Judes! I think our class gets better and better as the weeks go by. Here is a look at our day today;

Math
Grade 1
In a circle, the grade 1’s e counted by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, one by one. In the middle of the circle there were large objects. The students had to come up and group them by 10’s. I recorded the amount of groups of 10’s and 1’s together on the board. This helped them understand that number patterns only deal with numbers, and not what things look like.  We had a big lesson today as I felt this was a hard concept for them to understand. In the Math Makes Sense notebook you will notice that it asks the students to estimate and then count objects. We used snap cubes to do this, but on the weekend, any group of objects will do! Please practice this with them over the weekend.
Homework:
MMS: pg. 142, 143-145.

Grade 2
The grade 2’s also had to estimate and use various ways of counting numbers. They are not focusing on patterns, but more so on the power of counting by 10’s, which has been greatly understood so far. They practiced this as a group using snap cubes, and then they worked on this skills in their math makes sense notebook.
Homework:
MMS: pg. 31 – 32

UOI
Grade 1
In groups the grade ones played the matching game with various rules.
The rules and reasons why the rules were created had to be matched together
The team that matched them all together first with the correct answers won. This was a great way to understand the meaning of rules in a fun and interactive way. Parents, this unit is coming to the end, so next week we will begin the summative. This will be done everyday during class time. I will be sending home a latter tonight explaining what we will be doing.

Grade 2
The grade 2’s were introduced to India, and had to find it on class world map.
Students plotted India on their world map worksheet. The students were divided into groups where each group was given information about food, clothing, transportation, shelter, leisure and other important information. Students read as a group and presented important information to class.

French: Mme. Stella

Quite Reading
Grade 1 & 2
Students got a chance to quietly read while I completed DRA assessments.

Gym – Mr. Browning

Art – Ms. Pattenick

Language
Grade 1 & 2
As both grades are starting to fully understand the vowels sounds and apply them to reading. We played a phonics-pumpkin word game today in class! We first went through all vowel sounds, and had to differentiate between the short sound and the long sound, and then we chose three words for each vowel sound. This was recorded on a sheet and we had a lot of fun.
Homework: Pumpkin Worksheet

Spelling
We completed the spelling test for both grades.

That’s all for the weekend!
Have a very good night J

Hello everyone!! Hope all is going well. This mornings Terry Fox Run was an amazing experience for both the students and me! It was great to see the school come together and run/walk for such a good cause! The class had a great time and I am so happy they did. Here is what our day looked liked;
Grade 1 and 2
In the morning we read the Terry Fox: Marathon of Hope book. As a class we talked a little bit about Terry Fox and why there is a run in his honour every year. Then we filled out a worksheet where they got to talk about Terry Fox and draw a picture.

TERRY FOX RUN!

UOI
We missed our UOI and French class today due to the Terry Fox Run

Math

Grade 2
The grade 2’s focused on subtraction and addition sentences, and the many ways you can write a number sentence with the same 3 numbers. They also focused on telling time, and understanding the difference between digital and analog time. They practiced this in the Arithmetic workbook.
Homework
A2 – Pg. 14 – 15

Language
Grade 1/2
Both the grade 1’s and 2’s reviewed the vowel sounds and bowel blends. Both grades also worked on consonant blends, which has been helping them with their reading skills. The grade 2’s also worked on finishing sentences with the appropriate details. Both grades also worked in their handwriting books. Starting Monday, I would like the students to begin writing in cursive.

Hello Parents! Now that casual day is over, all we have to remember is the Terry Fox run will take place tomorrow from 10:00am to 11:30 am. Please send your children to school in their gym clothes tomorrow.  I also sent home math and spelling tests today, please sign and send back. There is a lunch form that I sent home concerning Monday, September 30th 2013. This day got missed so if you would like to pay for your child’s lunch that day, please send it back as it is not included in the lunch program for September. Here is what we did today!

Math
Grade 1
Today we began our new unit in math, which is focused on number patterns. I think it is great because they just finished the patterning unit, so they already have been practicing how to create patterns and how to finish them. We looked at how we see patterns using numbers. Together we worked on the bunny rabbit question, and then they finished it in their Math Makes Sense books.
Homework: pg. 140 – 141

Grade 2
Students continued reviewing the importance of numbers and everything that we use numbers for on a daily basis. We practiced how to skip count by 2’s, 5’s. 10’s. We connected this with the place value system and looked at how we can represent numbers in different ways.
WORKSHEETS: “LineMaster 3”
MMS: pg. 30

UOI
Grade 1
Students were given a scenario that stated a certain rule that was very extreme, and not realistic. In groups, students fixed the rules, and thought of more realistic ones for that particular situation.  They had to act this out in front of the class, and we had a class discussion on the rules that the students created. We have a very dramatic bunch! They love to act J

Grade 2
The grade 2s were introduced to Japan today and had to find it on the world map. Students had to plot Japan on their world map worksheet. They were then divided into groups and each group was given information about food, clothing, transportation, shelter, leisure and other important information. As a group they had to read this information and present it to the class. They then filled out graphic organizer worksheet about Japan.

French: Mme. Stella

Novel Study
Grade 1 & 2
We recapped what we have read so far in our novel “Flat Stanley”. Like I mentioned yesterday, most of the students had trouble making text to self-connections. We went through this again today and finished and corrected the flat Stanley work from yesterday.

Gym: Mr. Browning

Art: Ms. Pattenick

Language
Grade 1 & 2
Both grades reviewed the consonant sounds. We are slowly moving from vowels to consonant bends now, and practicing what sound they make together. I find this really helps with their reading skills. They practiced in their Letter and Sounds workbook.

Homework:
Grade 1: LS – pg. 17 – 18

Grade 2: LS – pg. 11 – 13

Quiet Reading
Grade 1 & 2
Both grades got to silently read today as I completed more DRA assessments.

Have a great evening everyone!

Terry Fox Run tomorrow!

Good evening parents. Just a reminder that tomorrow is casual day at St. Judes Academy. I know I said yesterday on my blog that you have to pay a dollar for casual day, but all the parents have already paid for this. So please do not send a dollar with your child. Here is a look at our day today;

Math:
Grade 1
We reviewed the place value system together has a class, and counting with bigger numbers. They also reviewed moving direction. They practiced these skills in their Arithmetic book.
Homework: A1 - pg. 21 -22

Grade 2
The grade 2 also reviewed the place value system as I feel they needed a recap on it. They also worked on telling time, and addition and subtraction problem solving.
Homework: Pg. 12 – 13

UOI
Grade 1
Students designed a poster based on a classroom rule. They had to state the rule, draw and colour a picture to promote that rule and explain why we use it in the classroom. This was done individually, as I was curious to see what rule the children chose as the most important one.

Grade 2
Students used the information from the graphic organizer from last class to write a postcard from Venice to a friend from home. The grade 2’s focused on information that is different than Mississauga so they were able to make a connection using their own personal experience.

Novel Study
Grade 1 &2
Today in our novel study, we focused on making connection with the texts. I have found that with most students, they have no trouble reading, but they have a harder time making “text-self connections”. We worked on this based on chapter 1 and chapter 2 of our novel, “Flat Stanley”.

Language
Grade 1
The grade 1’s worked on short vowel sounds again, as well as plural words, and comprehension. They practiced these skills in their Language book. They also practiced their cursive writing.
Homework: Language 1 – pg. 14 – 15
HWT: pg. 18

Grade 2
The grade 2’s worked on understanding how to count syllables, and they continued finishing sentences using details. They practiced this in their Language workbook.
Homework: Language 2– pg. 12 -13
