Hello Parents,

Hope everyone is having a great day! I just wanted to let everyone know that I sent home the “October Lunch Program” form. If parents are interested, please send the form and the money back with your child. There is also a Cross Country team this year that begins in grade 2. For all the grade 2 parents, there is a practice tomorrow that will start at 4:00pm and ends at 4:30pm. If your child has signed up for Cross Country please make sure the appropriate clothing and shoes are packed along with a water bottle! Thanks! I am very pleased with the way today ran. Students are really starting to come together a class. Just to let all parents know that when arriving in the morning, there is a new system that will help keep our class organized. When the students arrive at school, I have asked that they take their homework out of their black courier bag and put it in the “homework bags” located at the back of the classroom. Then students are to then put their agendas in the “In” bin and their black courier bags in the “Out” bin. I am finding it tough to keep track of things and this worked well for me today. Here is what our day looked like!

UOI:
Grade 1:
We reviewed what responsibility is and went through some examples together.
Students acted out different scenarios and then we discussed how we can change them to be more responsible. We also brainstormed things we need to be responsible for in the classroom on chart paper.
NO HOMEWORK

Grade 2:
Students discussed features of other communities in Canada and compared them to their own.
o   Igloolik and Vancouver
o   Differences in clothing, food, shelter, recreation
They also worked on plotting provinces on a map!
NO HOMEWORK

Math
Grade 1:
In math today the grade ones focused on counting numbers from 1 to 20, and practiced writing “addition families” in their arithmetic books.
Homework: A1  - PG. 16-17
Test on Monday, September 23, 2013

Grade 2:
As a class we went over the importance of an attribute and how they have taught us how to sort and make patterns. They also practiced subtraction and addition in their arithmetic books. I also sent home a review workbook home that will assist them in studying for their test. This should be done by Thursday. I am sorry I forgot to write this on the agenda board.
Homework : A2 – PG. 10 – 11
Test Friday, September 20, 2013.

Novel Study
Grade 1 &2
Today we finished chapter 2 in our novel; “Flat Stanley” The children really love this book! We worked on getting to recognize different characters within the novel. They had to write down in their novel study journal which ones they have met so far.

Language:
Grade 1
The grade ones worked on their cursive writing today. They are getting used to various letters, but still needs some work.
Homework: HWT – PG. 11-13

Grade 2
The grades twos worked on phonics in their “Letter and Sound” booklet. Right now they are focusing on writing a proper sentence. They also worked on their handwriting.
Letters and Sounds: PG. 7-8
Homework: HWT: PG. 16

All students should be practicing their spelling words for the test on Friday.

I have also started doing DRA’s. For those parents who are unfamiliar with this, it is a reading assessment to see what level the child is reading at, so I am able to work on weaknesses to make them the possible readers.

Have a wonderful evening.
