Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Hello everyone! Picture day is on Monday, October 28, 2013. Please have your child come to school in full uniform. Here is a look at our day today;

Math
Grade 1
Today the grade 1’s began a new unit in math. We brainstormed things we already know about numbers. We did this on chartpaper which will be up in the classroom during this unit. Students then completed MMS pg 19. After the students finished, came back to the carpet and looked at the big math book. In pairs, students counted objects and filled out a number card, and shared their findings with the class.
Homework:
MMS pgs. 20-21.

Grade 2
Today the grade 2’s reviewed the major concepts that they have learned throughout this unit so far. As a class we will review how materials can help finding number patterns. We looked at the big math pages 9 and 10 and discuss number patterns together.
Homework:
MMS: pg. 50-52

Unit of Inquiry
Grade 1
Now that we reviewed what herbivores are and what dinosaurs are herbivores, we are looking at carnivores. I read an excerpt from the dinosaur book and then we talked about dinosaurs and what carnivores are. I asked students to identify what a carnivore is? Then I asked how scientists knew that certain dinosaurs were carnivores. (looked at their teeth, their teeth are sharp and pointy). Together we discussed some dinosaurs that eat meat only, and made a list on chart paper.
Students will read and answer questions about the T-Rex a meat eater based on the writing excerpt.

Grade 2
The grade 2’s joined Ms. Dacosta’s class in the portable today. They used the smart board as they continued to learn about media.

Novel Study: Flat Stanley
Grade 1 & 2
The students compared and contrasted Stanley and themselves! Student’s will completed a Venn diagram sheet to show their ideas. This really allowed the students to make connections.

Work Finish Up
This period was devoted to catch time. As a class, students worked on anything outstanding, or any homework they did not finish earlier in the day. This was great because I was able to work with students who needed clarification on anything we did that day.

Have a great night!
Ms. Rossi
