Blog 23 (Monday, October 7, 2013)

Good evening parents! Hope that everyone enjoyed the weekend. Just reminders to all parents that this upcoming Friday, October 11, 2013, and Monday, October 14, 2013 are PA days. So please do not send your children to school. There is also a Fall Festival at which takes place on Wednesday, October 30th, 2013 at 7pm. Tickets will be on sale tomorrow at first recess. They are $3.00 each J  Also it is very important to understand the uniform changes that will occur after the holiday. The students may no longer come to school wearing a polo (short sleeve shirt). All students, both boys and girls must come to school wearing a long sleeve dress shirt starting, Tuesday, October 15, 2013. Here is a look at our day;

Math
Grade 1
Today in math class, we discussed how to use number patterns to solve problems. We looked at a picture together, and as a class we discussed what we already knew about the picture, and how that information could help us solve the problem. I felt that this was a hard concept to grasp at first, so we will definitely be revisiting this topic.
Homework:
MMS pg. 151-152

Grade 2
The students focused on the meaning of doubles and how we can use doubles to help us find the sum of other addition and subtraction sentences. As a class we looked at a picture with dominoes on the sheet, and circled the ones that showed doubles. We then looked at the sum of each double. They practiced this skill in their Math Makes Sense Notebooks.
Homework: MMS pg. 38-39

UOI
Grade 1
The grade 1’s started off today by listening to a book written by Jamie Lee Curtis. This booked listed a bunch of different responsibilities of a young girl that changed as she grew up. I found they could relate to this book, which further helps them understand our unit. We then made our title pages for our IB portfolio, which we will begin putting together next week.

Grade 2
The grade two's today took the first steps to building their own country! After reading selections from the book "How To Build Your Own Country" Students finalized the names of their country and began work on their countries flag.

Snuggle up and Read
Today both grade 1’s and 2’s brought in their favorite books. Together with a partner they both read a book at a time together, and shared their favorite parts of the book. This was a great activity, as they got really excited about reading!

Spelling
Grade 1 &2
Students will be writing down their spelling words in their spelling notebooks. They must do this three times for each word, and then they must formulate sentences for each word. The students will then practice using these words in their spelling workbooks.
Spelling A: pg. 25 – 28
Spelling B: pg. 21 – 24

Have a great night!
Ms. Rossi
