Tuesday, October 22. 2013

Hi everyone, just reminding all parents that Monday, October 28, 2013 is picture day. Please have all students dressed in full uniform. In order to improve our facility, and make the playground and parking lot safer for our community, we will be re-paving the playground and the parking lot. This will begin on November 4th and we are expecting that it will take 2 weeks. During this time, parents must park on Campabello road and bring their children inside and outside through the front doors only. There was a letter sent home tonight explaining this in more detail. Thank you for your cooperation. Here is a look at our day;

Math
Grade 1
Students wrote a speed drill to practice addition and subtraction. We reviewed finding missing addends, writing two-digit numbers, comparing sizes, counting from 50-100, counting dimes, comparing numbers on the board together first.
Homework:
A1: pgs. 41-44

Grade 2
Students will work on adding, subtracting, counting money, and telling time in their arithmetic workbooks. As a class we reviewed these concepts, and then students completed their work in class.
Homework
A2:  pg. 33 – 35

Unit of Inquiry
Grade 1
Today as a class we discussed some dinosaur facts. We first listened to a herbivore song on the internet;  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-Cgw_UXP-w
We then discussed what a herbivore is together (animal who eats plants only).
We also talked about how scientists can tell what dinosaurs herbivores? (looked at their teeth, they had more rounded teeth not sharp and pointy) We will create a list on chart paper on what dinosaurs were herbivores.
Students then filled out the stegosaurus worksheet, with facts about this herbivore dinosaur!

Grade 2
Today the Grade twos expanded on yesterdays lesson by investigating into the purpose of different media working both in broad strokes such as what type of media might be serving what purpose and also specific media such as what the purpose of a specific ad or commercial. We ended the lesson with a game of riddles to decode into types of media, each riddle solved gained a student a point

Read Aloud
Grade 1 and 2
We worked on reading comprehension with the story “I like pumpkins”.

Novel Study: Flat Stanley
Grade 1 & 2
The students listened as I read chapter 5 of Flat Stanley to the class. We then discussed this chapter for a few minutes. (who, what, where, when, why, how). The students then filled out a story map, allowing them to draw these main ideas on paper.

Cursive Writing
Both grade 1’s and 2’s were given time today to practice their cursive writing. I have noticed that a lot of the students need to practice their cursive writing, and how to complete it neatly.

Have a great night everyone!
Ms. Rossi
